Roofing Calculator: Area & Roofing Squares Estimate
Calculate roof surface area and roofing squares using roof dimensions and pitch. Start with a simple roof or add individual roof planes for more detailed measurements. Then carry your measurements into a separate materials estimate.
Measure Your Roof
Choose the measurement method that matches the information you have.
Quick mode assumes a rectangular roof projection and one uniform roof pitch. For intersecting roofs, use Detailed Measurements.
Enter each non-overlapping roof plane separately. For each plane, specify whether its dimensions are measured horizontally or along the actual sloped surface.
Explore Roof Measurements in 3D
Rotate and explore a 3D roof model to better understand roof measurements and pitch.
1. Measure Roof Area
Enter dimensions and roof pitch. For complex roofs, add each plane individually.
2. Calculate Materials
Choose a roofing system and calculate its specific materials and waste allowance.
3. Estimate Project Cost
Take your roof measurements to the roofing materials calculator, then estimate project expenses with the roofing cost calculator.
How to Calculate Roof Area and Roofing Squares
A roof's horizontal projected area is the area it covers when viewed from above. Its roof surface area is the actual sloped area to be covered. For a rectangular roof, start with the building length and width, add the horizontal overhang on each side, and multiply the adjusted dimensions to estimate the projected roof area.
For a uniformly pitched roof, multiply the projected area by the roof pitch factor: √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). For example, a 6:12 pitch has a factor of about 1.118, so 2,000 square feet of projected area becomes approximately 2,236 square feet of sloped roof surface. If you measured the dimensions directly along the slope, do not apply the pitch factor again.
A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Divide the calculated square footage by 100 to estimate roofing squares. For example, 2,500 square feet equals 25 roofing squares. These figures represent roof geometry—not shingle bundles or a waste-adjusted material order.
Roof Area Calculator FAQs
What is a roofing square?
One roofing square is 100 square feet of actual roof surface area. It is a common US roofing measurement unit, not a package of shingles.
How does roof pitch change the area?
For a plane measured in horizontal projection, multiply projected area by √(1 + (rise/12)²). For dimensions measured directly on the sloped roof surface, do not apply the pitch factor again.
Does this include waste?
No. Roof area is the measured geometric surface. Waste depends on roofing material, geometry, cutting layout, and product coverage, so it belongs in the materials calculator.
Can I measure a roof with different pitches?
Yes. Use Detailed Measurements and add a separate non-overlapping plane for each roof surface. Each plane can have its own pitch and measurement basis.
Can this replace a professional roof survey?
No. Results represent geometric roof surface area. Waste depends on the roofing material, roof shape, cutting layout, and product coverage. Use the roofing materials calculator for material quantities and allowances.
Can I calculate a roof with multiple pitches?
Yes. Choose Detailed Measurements and enter each roof plane separately. Each plane can have its own pitch and can be measured horizontally or directly along the slope. Avoid overlapping areas.
How accurate is this roofing calculator?
The tool applies standard geometric calculations to the dimensions and pitch you provide. Actual accuracy depends on your measurements and roof geometry. Verify complex intersections, dormers, valleys, and other details on site before ordering materials.
